Transportation Assistance for ISP Families
Information about benefits available under Iowa law
Overview
Under Iowa Code 285, families whose children attend accredited nonpublic schools may be eligible for transportation assistance from their local public school district. This is a state program that has been in place for many years and applies to all accredited nonpublic schools in Iowa, including Iowa Sports Prep.
How the Program Works
Public school districts are required to provide one of the following to families attending accredited nonpublic schools:
- Transportation — If your home is on an existing bus route that serves your area, the district may offer bus service, OR
- Reimbursement — If bus service is not available, districts provide an annual reimbursement to help offset transportation costs (typically around $719 per family)
Most ISP families receive the reimbursement option since students are located throughout the state.

How to Apply
Step 1: Identify Your Local District
Your local district is determined by where your family lives, not where ISP is headquartered.
Step 2: Contact the District
Reach out to your district's transportation office and let them know your child attends an accredited nonpublic school. Ask about the nonpublic school transportation reimbursement process.
Step 3: Provide Documentation
Districts typically request:
- Proof of enrollment (ISP can provide a verification letter)
- Proof of residency in the district
- Completed application form
Step 4: Receive Assistance
Once approved, the district will provide either transportation services or reimbursement according to their process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as my ESA?
No. This is a separate program under Iowa Code 285. Your ESA covers tuition and educational expenses through the Odyssey platform. Transportation assistance comes directly from your local school district.
Do I have to use the reimbursement for transportation?
The reimbursement is intended to help offset transportation costs for attending a nonpublic school.
What if I have multiple children at ISP?
The reimbursement is typically calculated per family rather than per student. Contact your district for their specific policies.
Is every family eligible?
Eligibility is determined by your local district based on Iowa Code 285 requirements. Contact them directly to confirm your eligibility and learn about their application process.
Need an Enrollment Verification Letter?
If your district requires proof that your child is enrolled at an accredited nonpublic school, contact your Student Success Coach and we'll provide a verification letter.
